Pentaerythritol is polyol organic compounds. Its chemical formula is C₅H₁₂O₄. It typically appears as white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water, slightly soluble in alcohol and formamide, but insoluble in benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ether, acetone and petroleum ether. Pentaerythritol is used in manufacture of Alkyd resins, fatty acid rosin and tall oil esters and to make paint and coatings, printing ink, coating adhesives, explosives, sealants, varnish, lacquer, vinyl chloride, synthetic rubber and miscellaneous including pentaerythritol tetranitrate (PETN), urethane coatings, flame retardant paints, polyvinyl chloride stabilizers, olefins antioxidant and pentaerythritol triacrylate.

Application

Coating industry

It can be used to make alkyd resin coatings, which can improve the hardness, gloss and durability of coating films. It also uses raw materials for rosin, such as coloring paints, varnishes and printing inks, and can produce drying oils, smolder coatings and aviation lubricants.

Explosives

Pentaerythritol contains four equal hydroxymethyl groups in the molecule, which has a high degree of symmetry, so it is often used as a raw material for the preparation of multifunctional compounds.

Fire retardant
