Two products labeled polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) may behave differently in the same formulation. Their degree of hydrolysis and viscosity can affect solution preparation, application and the properties of the dried film. For adhesive and paper-product manufacturers, the useful question is therefore not simply which PVA grade is available, but which grade works under their production conditions. Our PVA product lists grades with different hydrolysis and viscosity specifications as a starting point for comparison.

Before comparing grades, define what the PVA needs to do. In an adhesive, it may contribute to viscosity, application behavior and bond performance. In paper surface sizing or coating, the priorities may include solution handling, coating uniformity, surface strength and print performance. The relevant tests depend on the rest of the formulation, the substrate and the application equipment.
Record the intended solids concentration, preparation method, operating temperature, application method and target properties. These details make a supplier's grade recommendation more useful and give the technical team a clear basis for sample testing.
Partially and fully hydrolyzed PVA grades should not be treated as direct substitutes. Their solution and film behavior can differ, so the appropriate range should be selected against the intended formulation and process. If an existing grade is being replaced, compare its documented specifications before running a production trial.
A viscosity value is meaningful only with its measurement conditions. Ask for the test concentration, temperature and method when comparing technical data sheets. Then check whether the candidate grade can meet the required application viscosity at the concentration used in production.
Solution preparation can affect batch time and consistency. During trials, record the addition sequence, mixing conditions, dissolution time and any undissolved material. Particle form and packaging also matter for storage and plant handling; availability should be confirmed for the specific grade being offered.
For an adhesive formulation, assess how the prepared PVA solution mixes with other ingredients and applies to the intended substrate. Depending on the product, useful checks may include open time, initial tack, drying, bond strength and performance after conditioning. Test results from the finished adhesive are more informative than a viscosity specification alone.
For paper surface sizing or coating, focus on the properties relevant to the line and finished sheet. These may include compatibility with pigments or other formulation components, application stability, penetration, surface strength and printability. Surface sizing and pigmented coating are different processes, so their acceptance criteria should be defined separately.
PVA also appears in other water-based formulations. Our earlier article on waterborne coatings discusses that application; the selection checks here focus on adhesives and paper products.

Degree of hydrolysis | Specified range for each candidate grade | Technical data sheet value verified by a standard analytical method |
Degree of polymerization / molecular weight | Specified range; cross-check against viscosity | Technical data sheet + cross-check with measured viscosity |
Viscosity | Published value and measurement conditions | Supplier method and a test at the intended use concentration |
Dissolution | Preparation time and solution consistency | Controlled preparation trial using plant-relevant equipment |
pH | pH range of a standard test solution | Supplier method and in-house measurement |
Ash content | Specified limit (affects paper brightness & adhesive color) | Standard analytical method (e.g., ignition residue) |
Volatile / residual monomer (VOC) | Specified limit for odor & hygiene compliance | Data sheet + standard method; confirm food-contact compliance if required |
Application performance | Bond properties or paper surface properties | Finished-formulation tests on representative substrates |
Supply requirements | Particle form, packaging and batch documents | Confirmation for the offered grade and shipment + receiving inspection / sample re-test for batch consistency |
Share the application, any current PVA grade, target concentration and viscosity, preparation equipment, substrate, required performance tests, packaging needs and destination market. If you are evaluating a replacement, provide the current grade's technical data sheet where available. These details help the supplier identify a relevant candidate and arrange a meaningful sample comparison. To discuss an offered grade and its documents, contact TJCY.
