Triisopropanolamine is an industrial-grade aqueous solution containing 85% triisopropanolamine by weight. Its chemical formula is C9H21NO3.

It is a base material for the production of triazine corrosion inhibitors. It can be used as a neutralizer for water-based coatings. It is usually a colorless to light yellow liquid with a slight ammonia smell. It is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, etc. Its main application areas include water-based coatings and agricultural products.

It is widely used in emulsifiers, stabilizers, chemical intermediates and neutralizers to achieve alkalinity, buffering and alkalinity. Other application areas include polymer antistatic agents, corrosion inhibitors, electrophoretic/electrophoretic coatings, lubricants, paper, pigment dispersants, plastics, polyurethane additives, reaction intermediates, rubber vulcanizers, surfactants, mineral dispersants and polyurethanes.

Grinding Aids in Cement Production

Triisopropanolamine has great application potential in the field of cement grinding aids. For a long time, the alcohol amine compounds used in cement grinding aids is mainly triethanolamine, but the dispersion and later strength of triisopropanolamine are better than those of triethanolamine, and the demand continues to grow. Due to the spatial three-dimensional structure of the alkane chain and hydroxyl isomerism of triisopropanolamine, its dispersibility is better than that of triethanolamine, and dispersibility is an important indicator of cement, so the effect of triisopropanolamine is better than that of triethanolamine in practical use.

Neutralizing Agent in Water-borne Coatings

The neutralizer has an effect on the storage stability, viscosity, curing speed of the coating, and the yellowing of the paint film. Triisopropanolamine has high reactivity and stability, and can react with the components in the coating to form a stable connection structure. FAQ

Q1: How does TIPA used in cement grinding agent?

The application of TIPA 85% in cement grinding aids is characterized by the presence of TIPA 85%, triethanolamine, additives and water in the cement grinding aid. According to the requirements of the formula, TIPA 85% is added with a certain proportion of water, and then other raw materials are added and stirred at room temperature and pressure in the kettle until the product indicators are qualified. The dosage of TIPA 85% is about 20%~60% of the total raw materials according to the formula requirements. There are two kinds of addition methods: one is that TIPA 85% is directly added in the cement grinding process, because when the temperature is low (<10 °C), the viscosity of 85% TIPA is large and difficult to transport. Add the first TIPA 85% to dilute it to about 65~70% with water, and transport it with a pump. The optimal dosage is about 1/10,000 of the total raw materials. The second is that directly add TIPA 85% in concrete production, TIPA 85% and high-efficiency superplasticizer are mixed, the dosage range of TIPA 85% is about 0.1% of cement, and the superplasticizer is 0.8% of cement (main excitation strength). With the increase of TIPA 85% content, the strength will gradually increase, but due to its dispersion improvement, the air entrainment will increase, so that the strength is hindered. When the entrainment exceeds 3%, the strength begins to decrease with the increase of gas content, at which point a certain amount of block polymer (about one-tenth of TIPA 85%) of epoxy compounds can be added.

Q2: Comparison of DEIPA with TEA and TIPA

Early strength enhancement: DEIPA has excellent early strength properties, but does not significantly shorten the setting time like triethanolamine, nor as sensitive to dosage of triethanolamine, and has a softer effect on the early hydration of cement.

Post strength enhancement: DEIPA's post-strength performance is significantly ahead of triethanolamine. Compared with triisopropanolamine, it is comparable in low-medium grade cement, but in high-grade cement, especially PI and PII Portland cement, the post-strength is generally slightly lower than TIPA.
