Calcium formate is a calcium salt and belongs to the class of inorganic compounds. Its chemical formula is C2H2CaO4.

It is usually white crystalline powder. It is soluble in water but insoluble in ethanol. It is an industrial compound and a rapid setting and early strength accelerator for concrete or mortar.

It can be used in the construction industry, as a concrete curing accelerator, in the production of feed mixtures, silage and in tanneries.

Application

Early Strength Agent in Concrete

Calcium formate is a new type of early strength material, which can effectively accelerate the hydration of tricalcium silicate C3S in cement and increase the early strength of concrete, but it will not cause corrosion to steel bars and other environmental pollution. Calcium formate can reduce the formation of porosity in concrete, and improve the compactness and impermeability of concrete.

It is suitable for the production and construction of emergency concrete works and precast concrete components.

Disinfectant and fungicide

Calcium formate can reduce the surface tension of the solid particles in the mortar, promote the wetting and dispersion of cement particles and water, make cement particles better separated from water, and improve the uniformity and stability of mortar.

Calcium formate has the effect of enhancing adhesion and can accelerate cement solidification, is used in ceramic tile adhesives, cement-based plastering mortars, repair mortars, waterproof mortars, thermal insulation mortars, wear-resistant floors, putty and other products.

What does Calcium Formate act in dry mix mortar?

Calcium Formate is main early strength agent in dry mortar, because its physical properties are stable at room temperature, with a fine particle or powder state, the particle size is usually relatively uniform, the fluidity is good, and it is conducive to uniform mixing. When the dry powder slurry is prepared and water is added, calcium formate can give well performance to its water reduction, dispersion properties, play the role of early strength and lubrication. Dry-mix mortar admixtures are mainly composed of redispersible polymer powder, water-retaining thickener, early strength agent, water reducer, coagulant agent, waterproofing agent, fiber, defoamer and so on.

Is there any dosage recommendation of Calcium Formate usage?

In summer, the dosage of calcium formate is usually 0.3-0.7% of the cement weight, while the dosage of calcium formate in winter should be increased appropriately with the decrease of temperature, and the dosage is about 0.5-1.0%. The amount of calcium formate should not be too high, otherwise it will lead to cracking.
